Will the Right Basic Income Please Stand Up: Communitarian Arguments for a Guaranteed Basic Income

Rhodes House, Oxford

Amitai Etzioni, former senior advisor to the White House and president of the American Sociological Association

In this lecture, Professor Etzioni addresses four questions about the controversial proposal for a guaranteed basic income (GBI):

1) Is everyone entitled to a basic minimum?
2) Is a GBI supportive of or antithetical to community bonds?
3) Would a GBI supplement or replace existing welfare systems?
4) Should the floor that GBI provides be accompanied by a ceiling on income and assets?
