Lord Justice Jacob completes the panel for the Public Debate
03 February 2011
We are pleased to announce that Lord Justice Jacob of the Court of Appeal of England and Wales will complete the panel for our Public Debate on 'The Role of Courts in a Democracy'.
With more than 30 years' experience, Lord Justice Jacob was appointed a Lord Justice of Appeal in October 2003, and will bring to the debate an invaluable insight into the evolving role of the judiciary in recent times.
The debate will be chaired by the legal commentator Joshua Rozenberg, and will feature the former Home Secretary Charles Clarke and Professor Richard Bellamy from UCL. They will contest the proper role of courts in a democracy and assess the growing trend towards the "judicialisation of politics", in which judges are increasingly implicated in settling policy disputes, especially in the context of constitutional rights.
The debate is organized in association with the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, Oxford, and will be held at Magdalen College Auditorium from 3pm on Friday 11th February.
