"What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility - a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world

Barack Obama's inauguration speech
As the first black President of the United States Barack Obama calls in his inauguration speech for a 'new era of responsibility', the Foundation is pleased to announce details of a forthcoming event entitled: 'Equality and Personal Responsibility in the New Social Contract'.
On 29 April, Professor John Roemer, Professor of Political Science and Economics at Yale University, will open the event with an address entitled, 'Equality in an Era of Responsibility'. He will explore the historical formulations of responsibility in egalitarian theory, and argue for a more direct and non-contractarian approach to integrate responsibility into egalitarian theory.
The lecture will be followed by a two-day workshop forming part of the Foundation's Social Contract Revisited programme, in which an international panel will attempt to reconcile two of the fundamental features of the social contract: equality and reciprocity. It will examine the nature of the reciprocal ties between the people and the government and amongst the people themselves, to arrive at a better understanding of personal choice, responsibility, and obligation to our fellow man.
