Constitutions and the Classics from Hobbes to Bentham and Beyond

3-4 December

Wolfson College, Oxford

This workshop will examine the nature and social basis of constitutions as conceived in the works of Hume, Hobbes, Locke, Smith, Bentham, Madison, and Sieyes. It will explore a range of approaches to the character and purposes of constitutions, with particular reference to their place in society, the social and political issues they are meant to deal with, and identify common themes, as well as competing ones, running through the classic accounts.
