FLJS workshops to investigate relationship between the law and the media

Following the publication earlier today of proposals to reform the law concerning superinjunctions by the master of the rolls Lord Neuberger, the Foundation for Law, Justice and Society is pleased to announce two new workshops investigating the relationship between the law and the media.

On 16th June, prior to the FLJS Annual Lecture, we will hold a workshop entitled: 'Constitutions and the Media: How the Media Presents and Reports on Constitutional Affairs'. The workshop will be held at the Jesus College Ship St Centre, Oxford, and will feature presentations by media lawyers and constitutional experts.

This will be followed later in the summer by a workshop entitled:

'The Court of Public Opinion: Justice, the Media and Popular Will', on 14th July.

This workshop will inquire into how the mass media shapes public opinion, and how this impacts on the opinion of judges and politicians. The general interaction between media and elite behaviour, whether judicial or political, remains little known. This workshop will bring together academics and practitioners to discuss contemporary questions raised by the interaction between courts and the media, including the current debate over superinjunctions and privacy law.

Participants include Sir Mark Potter, former President of the Family Division of the High Court, who advocated that hearings should be opened up to the media.
