Employment Law Expert Challenges New Labour Policies

Speaking at a conference organized by the Foundation for Law, Justice and Society in Oxford on 29 October, Professor Hugh Collins (LSE) will argue that New Labour, not the Thatcher government, was responsible for the real break from the political settlements of the Trade Disputes Act 1906, which established collective bargaining as a primary guarantee of social justice. Oxford Thinktank and Aspen Institute Investigate Detention without Trial

Former US Army Judge Advocate Criticises Chief Justice’s ‘Disingenuous’ Comments on Guantanamo Ruling

Former US Army Judge Advocate David Graham has criticised as “disingenuous” Chief Justice Roberts’ claim that the Supreme Court has struck down “the most generous set of procedural protections ever afforded aliens detained by this country as ‘enemy combatants’”. Read more

Chief Justice of South Africa to talk on Constitution and Socio-Economic Rights

Chinese Judges Comment on Need for Judicial Reform in China
15 December 2007

The Foundation for Law, Justice and Society’s conference on Judicial Reforms in China was held at L’Institut des Hautes Etudes sur la Justice (l’IHEJ), Paris on 13-14 December. It brought together a selection of academics and practitioners from around the world to provide global and regional perspectives on China’s emerging judicial reforms, as well as a panel of four Chinese judges to provide firsthand accounts of the judiciary in China. US Chief Officer for Strategic Planning of Social Security attacks 'myth' of US pension policy
12 October 2007

On Thursday 11 October, at a conference on Income Support organized by the Foundation for Law, Justice and Society in Oxford, Dalmer Hoskins, the newly appointed Chief Officer for Strategic Planning of the Social Security Administration of America, attacked the US pensions policy by declaring, ‘We are living with the myth that we have, in the United States, a pension policy. I would say, without any hesitation, that we do not.’

Will the Right Basic Income Please Stand Up?

On Wednesday 10 October, the Foundation for Law, Justice and Society, in association with the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, Oxford University, hosts a Keynote Address by Amitai Etzioni on guaranteed basic income (GBI).

As Gordon Brown imposes a pay ceiling on public sector workers well below the rate of inflation, Etzioni will provide a timely response from his unique perspective as founder of the Communitarian movement.
